Live the Adventure

India -- A Thrilling Ride
~ Tara Shetty

Tenzing Norgay once said - "Adventure tourism is growing rapidly in India as access to remote areas is improving all the time. The adventurous mind is welcomed by -- the people, the scenic beauty, the enormous variety of cultures and religions, warm hospitality and the skill with which life is tackled."

Known for its cultural diversity, India also offers a variety of opportunities for the adventure lover. You can choose from among the soaring heights of the Himalayas and the harsh deserts of Rajasthan, to the cool waters of Kerala. Every part of India offers scope for adventure tourism. Some of the adventure activities that you can indulge in are:

Mountaineering: India is the place to be for mountain-climbers as there is a wide range of mountains to choose from -- the Himalayas, the Aravallis, the Sahyadris, the Vindhyas, and many more.

Mountain-Biking: India offers splendid mountain-biking opportunities. Ride through great offbeat routes and the highest road pass in the world in Himachal Pradesh.

River Running: Even if you have tried rafting, canoeing, and kayaking, you should try night rafting. Raft in the light of the full moon through the Himalayas and experience adventure in a 'different light.'

Trekking: A trekker’s paradise, India offers a number of great trails. You can trek through the popular Kulu-Manali area, take in the natural beauty of the Kumaon and Garhwal region, feast your eyes on the colorful lake flowers in Sikkim, experience the splendid beauty of the Himalayas in Darjeeling, and explore the many forts in the Sahyadris.

Frozen River Zanskar Trek: This exciting and challenging trek begins in the Tibetan kingdom of Ladakh and takes you over the frozen river Zanskar in the north. Conducted in winter, this trek over the frozen river includes night stops at villages and natural caves. How’s that for excitement?

Camel Safari: What better way to explore the desert land than on the 'ship of the desert?' Discover rustic Rajasthan on a camel safari. Move through remote villages, camp on an oasis, or dance to haunting music on a dark starry night.

Yak Safari: For a unique experience, take the yak safari in Sikkim. A safari with a difference, it takes you through spectacular mountains, which leave you spellbound. The route follows the ancient grazing trail of yak herdsmen and has breathtaking views of lakes, glacial valleys, streams, snow peaks, meadows, forests, and waterfalls.

Nature Walk: Walk through the Namdhapa and Kaziranga national parks in north-east India. Get set to encounter diverse tribal cultures and rich wildlife.

So, what are you waiting for? Get those backpacks ready and set out on an adventurous journey through India.
